Namakubi (生首), meaning "freshly-severed head," is a striking Japanese motif intended to shock and frighten. Originating in Edo period (1603-1868) ukiyo-e artwork, it remains prevalent in traditional irezumi (tattoos) today.
In Japanese folklore, there is a legend about a mythical giant snake demon known as Uwabami (蟒蛇). These massive serpents are famous for their enormous appetite and their tendency to ambush travelers.
